Being born and raised in Hong Kong, a densely populated yet tiny city, my works shape time and space while merging the intimate with the confrontational. Imagine walking across a narrow street teeming with scores of strangers going in opposite directions first thing on the first day of any workweek. The proximity and friction of these daily occurrences have left a deep impression on my own approach to the body in space and in relation to technology. With a background in media technology and critical theories, I see my work in electronic media as evolving from and contributing to aesthetic and conceptual forces. Choreography and the orchestration of interactivity are central to my projects. The transformation of space between viewers and artwork evokes an alternative sense/sensation of time. The actual resonance one can find in technology becomes the amplifier for poetic suggestion. My work explores the im/possibility of intimacy between body and technology. Through interactivity in participatory situations, impressions alternate between the visceral and palpable, the fleeting and intangible. The responsive environment generates a constantly changing social formation among the audience. The process of internalizing these impressions into personally meaningful enactments can be voluntary — as in the gallery, or involuntary — as in the public place. My artistic process is rooted in my practice as an experimental theatre performer. The manipulation of time, the reflexivity of space, the attention to the body and the cyclical structure of narrative inform the way I stage participants as performers. The resulting transient spatial negotiations and fleeting relationships encourage and sometimes intensify a physical and emotional awareness of our motivations. |
